Boy Named After Wayne Rooney 3 Refused Name on Easter Egg Due To Copyright Infringement

Jo-anne Scholes was left outraged by Thornton’s staff

A little boy was told he couldn’t have his own name iced on an Easter egg because it would infringe the copyright of England footballer Wayne Rooney.

The Bury branch of Thornton’s refused to use only the first name of Rooney Scholes, three, who is named after Rooney, on a personalised egg for fear of reprisals from the Manchester United star.

Instead, they insisted only the child’s full name could be used.

Rooney’s mother Jo-Anne Scholes, 43, described the decision as ‘pathetic’, and said she ‘can’t imagine Wayne Rooney would care less’.

‘It’s just nonsense anyway. Rooney is his name, does that mean he’s not allowed to have his name on anything because he shares it with a famous footballer?’ she told the Mirror.

Ms Scholes, who is a huge United fan and has a tattoo of Eric Cantona on her arm, added: ‘It’s really annoying because it turned what was meant to be a nice, personal gift into something which looked really impersonal and just a bit silly really.’
